The code from Germany and the device that was used in decoding it are thought to be some of the first examples of machine learning which goes hand in hand with artificial intelligence. Turing stated that machines who could win at the “imitation game” should be considered intelligent in at least some regard. While the concepts that they discussed at the time were still in their infancy, they were the foundation for modern AI as we know it today.

At the Dartmouth Conference which was organized by John McCarthy in 1956, the phrase artificial intelligence was first coined. Several research centers began opening up through the United States that were dedicated to researching the concept and advancing it as much as they could at the time. Computer scientists Herbert Simon and Allen Newell were some of the leaders that were promoting the concept as they believed it was something that would change the world. While it may not have had that much of an impact until decades later, the foundation work that they laid out was instrumental and is still considered important even today.

Several decades later in the 1990s, interest in artificial intelligence began to once again grow and more money was being put towards studying the concept. Some of the biggest corporations in the United States started to want to find out how they could apply it to different industries or even create new ones. With a computer called Deep Blue by IBM managing to beat a World Champion in a game of chess, people realized that AI had the potential to soon be holding conversations with people and possibly being able to reason in a way that is similar to humans.
