Samsung now has even more competition with fledgling smartphone firm Nothing launching its next and massively upgraded Android-powered device. After months of rumours and leaks the Phone (2) has been officially revealed during a major event in London and it gets a mighty upgrade under its glass and metal body.
Nothing has decided to boost the power in its new smartphone with owners being treated to a much more premium Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor from Qualcomm.
Although that 2021 chip isn’t the latest and greatest brains (that accolade goes to the 8 Gen 2 which was revealed last year) it is still way more powerful than the Snapdragon 778G that was found in the Nothing Phone (1). The inclusion of the 8 Gen 1 will not only make this latest call maker a bit quicker but should also improve the efficiency of the device – that means longer battery life and more time between charging.
Along with those upgraded brains, we the Phone (2) is also getting a boost to its unique Glyph Interface which is tucked under the see-through rear panel.
For those not aware, the Glyph Interface lights up and flickers depending on when texts or calls are received. It basically means you can see if someone is attempting to contact when the screen is face-down on your desk. You can even tap the rear case to see how how battery life is left in the tank.
On the 2023 model, Nothing has confirmed that it has joined forces with the house music supergroup, Swedish House Mafia, to compose an exclusive Glyph Sound Pack.
Finally, the Glyph Interface can now serve as a visual countdown and progress tracker for ride or delivery services. This allows you to see how far away the Uber is without looking at the screen
Plus there’s a new Glyph Composer which lets users personalise and remix Swedish House Mafia’s custom sounds. Owners will be able to tap each pad on the screen to trigger different light and sound combinations to compose their own Glyph Ringtone.
Other features found on the Phone (2) include fast refilling, a dual-lens camera that’s powered by Sony technology plus there’s Nothing’s unique take on Google’s Android operating system. Owners will also be treated to a 6.7-inch OLED screen with an adaptive refresh rate which helps improve battery life.
The Phone (2) will go on sale later this week with a starting price of under £600.
“With Phone (2), we deliver top-notch features while encouraging more intentional smartphone usage through hardware and software design innovation,” said Carl Pei, CEO and Co-founder of Nothing. “The smartphone is a vital tool in our lives, but it has increasingly become a distracting force, making us less present and less creative.”
