Repsol Pioneers AI Agent Platform for Digital Transformation Spanish Energy Gia

Repsol has launched an internal intelligent agent construction platform, marking a further step in the Spanish energy company’s digitalization process. The new platform uses agent-based artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-agent systems to organize AI agents into complex workflows, according to a press release issued by the company.

The innovative pilot project was developed in collaboration with Accenture. Repsol says the multi-agent systems are designed to foster new collaborative environments among teams, enabling employees to enhance working models and, in turn, boost productivity. The company developed extensive knowledge bases specifically to support the AI agents and also designed a custom interface to adapt language models for professional collaborative use.

The pilot program was deployed within Repsol’s Digitalization and Services department, which has more than 700 employees. The company stated that 22 AI agents were deployed across three teams, providing support for over four months in key processes within the department. Subsequently, more than 50 employees collaborated to supervise the teams of AI agents, which the company claims led to “numerous efficiencies and improvements.”

Susana Meseguer, Executive Managing Director of Digitalization and Services at Repsol, said the platform demonstrates the company’s ambition to strengthen its position as a pioneer in using disruptive technologies in the energy sector.

“Since we launched our Digital Program more than six years ago, one of our main objectives has been to advance in efficiency and competitiveness, to continue transforming our company with the talent of our employees and digitalization as a key element,” Meseguer stated.

Repsol’s Digitalization Program is a core component of the company’s Strategic Plan until 2027, aiming to use new technologies like AI to aid the company in the challenges of energy transition and decarbonization. Repsol has been leveraging generative AI for over two years through its Generative AI Competence Center, reporting over 60 use cases in production, with 22 already scaled up, and the training of over 5,000 employees in generative AI techniques.

The move highlights a growing trend within the global energy sector, where major players are increasingly investing in sophisticated AI systems to streamline complex operational processes, manage vast datasets, and drive efficiency gains. A recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) noted that most generative AI initiatives fail to demonstrate real value. However, Repsol claims its success is due to key factors, including reinventing workflows, committing to multi-agent systems for complex processes, and focusing on promoting collaborative professional environments. The deployment of this new multi-agent platform positions Repsol alongside other energy majors that are integrating advanced AI to maintain competitiveness and adapt to the rapidly evolving technological and environmental landscape.
