In our exclusive GenAI segment, The Fast Mode spoke to Softil’s Anatoli Levine on how AI and Generative AI are transforming telecom and enterprise networks, from managing network performance to mitigating threats and improving efficiency.
Communications is a lifeline of public safety. With the ongoing shift of public safety communications towards mobile broadband, reliable, resilient, predictable, and efficient network operation is critical for successful public safety operations. Whether in normal day-to-day operation mode or responding to a crisis or a natural disaster, network communications cannot afford the luxury of failure or subpar performance.
There is a plethora of tools available for network management, but lately, the latest reinforcement has arrived in the form of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) capabilities.
A great advantage of GenAI is its ability to process large amounts of data and subsequently, make sense of such data, increasingly so in real time. GenAI can identify trends and patterns, which can now become a foundation, for instance, for network optimization. Think about network connectivity near a sports stadium with regularly scheduled competitions. These competition days require an increased presence of public safety personnel – police, firefighters, EMTs – which requires proper network access optimization to ensure public safety can reliably use broadband communications. Now, GenAI in combination with ORAN capabilities can optimize network access for first responders by reconfiguring access priorities and bandwidth management on the fly – and fully automatically, without the need for human intervention and painstaking pre-planning.
Here is another use case to consider. GenAI might learn that there is a spike in network traffic at a certain location during a specific time interval on specific days. When such a network traffic spike does not materialize, that can be an indication of a possible network traffic issue, specific equipment malfunction, or similar. In such a case, GenAI might have the capability to both raise an alert for a potential network issue and find a different network route to proactively address potential malfunction – all without or at least before any potential human intervention.
Another task perfectly suitable for GenAI is the management of network access and associated bandwidth and priorities. Once the UE is identified as belonging to a first responder, GenAI can manage routing and priority of communications even at the radio access level, ensuring that first responders’ traffic always gets appropriate treatment. By being able to analyze in real time the entirety of the access traffic throughout the whole carrier network and learn from such analysis, GenAI might be able to detect real-world emergencies even before they are fully reported – imagine hundreds of 911/112 calls coming from the same location – GenAI will be able to prioritize first responders’ access even before the priority is requested from the network.
GenAI is affecting all elements of societal fabric across companies, countries, and industries. While having a global impact, there are some areas where AI-driven enhancements will be more essential. With the world switching to broadband-powered critical communications, GenAI applications to improve network access and network management for first responders have a bright future ahead of them.
